Papago FITA Archer Club members during 2007 Arctic Challenge. Notice how cold it was!
The Arizona State Archery Association's State Championship for FITA Field was held on October 18 & 19 at the Usery Mountain Archery Complex just outside of Mesa, Arizona. The weather was all Arizona, HOT!. It was in the mid-nineties both days and 26 Archers braved the heat, consuming eight cases of water.
This was one of the largest turn-out for this event and for the first time there were a large group of JOAD Archers entered. A total of 8 with most of them shooting their first field event.
Special thanks to Richard Doria and David Twigg. Without their dedication to the sport, Field Archery in Arizona would have faded away. Thanks to the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department and Jennifer Johnston for the great facility and Thanks to camp host Charles Winder. Without Charles, archery doesn't happen at Usery.
Here are the facts;
Temperature in the mid-nineties.
26 total Archers, 8 JOADS, 16 Compounds, 4 Recurves and 6 Barebow.
We had 27 Archers come out for our September 13th Adult/JOAD FITA 900. It was a little hot at 100 degrees with a nice breeze. The JOAD particiapation was good and The Corner Kids JOAD club from Corner Archery had the largest turnout. James Rutherford from corner Kids had a perfect 300 at his last distance! We had a lot of Archers who entered their first tournament and 900's are a perfect tournament for them. Here are the results
2008 PFA 1/2 FITA - A Benefit for Paralympian Eric Bennett
20 Archers came out to the range on Saturday, May 17th to shoot in the PFA's 1/2 FITA. This year all the entry fees went to support Arizona's own Eric Bennett. Eric is a High School Science Teacher who earned a spot on the U.S. Paralympic Archery Team. He will be competing in the 2008 Paralympics held in Beijing, China in September. Eric shot with us and of couse, being an Olympian, kicked our behinds. Some of the highlights were 8 year old Cody Johnson, who in his second ever tournament shot a 656 in the yeoman, compound division. Also, Marilyn Romaine who participated in her first ever tournament in the Master 50+, Barebow division and Travis Johnson (Cody's Dad) who shot his first FITA in the Senior Compound Division. All in all, we all had a good time and it was for a great cause. Good luck to Eric!! Results

Field Archery
What is Field Archery? A simple explanation wpould be to say that Field Archery is a series of targets set upon a path with varying distances and angles. Needless to say, there is a little more to it than that. Both the NAA and the NFAA hold Field Archery tournaments. Both are very different.
Papago FITA Archers club member David Twigg is our source of knowledge when it comes to Field Archery. Dave has written two very good articles on both types of Field Archery. Also, FITA has a very good article on FITA Field. The PFA ecourages each Archer to try their hand at Field Archery. You will find that it is a fun, yet challenging part of the sport of Archery.
